Environmentalists often accuse more rational people of ignoring the “settled science” of global warming. Of course, when the science doesn’t fit their agenda, these same people have no problem ignoring it. Take for instance, CAFE standards. Since as early as 1999, we have known that higher CAFE standards are deadly because they force us to use smaller cars:
According to a recent USA Today analysis of NHTSA and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety data, 46,000 Americans have died in car accidents since 1975 that they would have survived had they been in larger cars.
Not only are CAFE standards deadly, but they don’t help the environment either:
A 1996 study funded by the Department of Transportation argues that raising the CAFE standards increases the tendency towards single occupancy driving because driving becomes less expensive. This increases overall gasoline usage, and increases the cost of public transportation as it attempts to offer more amenities to compete with private single occupancy vehicles…
So, what do we get today from the Obama administration? You guessed it – a proposal for a federal emissions standard that would effectively increase the CAFE standards (previously only states had emissions standards, California being the most egregious of course) and cost you more money:
President Barack Obama wants drivers to go farther on a gallon of gas and cause less damage to the environment — and be willing to pick up the tab.
Obama on Tuesday planned to announce the first-ever national emissions limits for cars and trucks, as well as require a 35.5 miles per gallon standard. Consumers should expect to pay an extra $1,300 per vehicle by the time the plan is complete in 2016.
The article is from the AP, and naturally says nothing about the increased risk of death to consumers. It also says nothing about the recent EPA memo that splashed cold water on the very idea that CO2 causes global warming. That same EPA memo also warned of the economic dangers posed by regulating CO2.
Here’s what we know:
- The EPA doubts that CO2 is a hazardous substance
- Reputable scientists also doubt that CO2 is a hazardous substance
- Regulating CO2 will probably hurt our economy
- Regulating CO2 will not help the environment
- Regulating CO2 will kill thousands of Americans every year
Given all of this (especially that last one), why is President Obama pushing for more regulation of CO2?
Meanwhile, prominent liberals spew forth CO2 like it’s nothing. Gore trounces around the world preaching pseudo-science in a private jet, Obama buzzes New York with Air Force One and two F-16s, and Nancy Pelosi gets free jet rides to and from California at your expense. Do you think these liberals will ever be negatively impacted in any way by higher emission standards? Nope.
Don’t just sit there fuming, contact your representatives in Washington and tell them you don’t support this nonsense.
